National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) Starting 7th July 2019

TURN THE DAY-TO-DAY INTO SAVE THE DAY

NATIONAL POOL LIFEGUARD QUALIFICATION (NPLQ)

By being a lifeguard, you can not only make a difference to a person’s life, but also your own life. There are loads of other benefits too:

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF COMPLETING THE NPLQ?

• Being the proud holder of a widely recognised lifeguard qualification. The NPLQ is a requirement for the majority of lifeguarding jobs in the UK and Ireland

• Meeting a great team of co-workers. You’ll always lifeguard in groups ranging from three to eight (depending on the size of the pool) and you’ll feel part of a national lifeguarding community which is over 80,000 strong

• Working flexible hours. Lifeguards benefit from varied working hours which can easily fit around other commitments. Leisure centres are normally open from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm, seven days a week, so finding a time to work that suits you is easy

• Learning First Aid and CPR. You’ll become confident in essential lifesaving skills that could help you save someone’s life at work and in your everyday life

• Making a difference. Lifeguards provide an amazing public service and make people feel confident and safe in the swimming pool environment. You’ll be respected and admired for your work

• Seeing the world. The NPLQ is internationally recognised, so there’s the potential to travel and work as a pool lifeguard around the world

• Shaping your future. Lifeguarding develops many transferable skills and offers a fantastic foundation for any career; whether it be in the leisure industry or beyond.

WHO CAN BECOME A LIFEGUARD?

Anyone who is 16-years-of-age or older at the time of taking the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) final assessment, and able to:

• Jump or dive into deep water

• Swim 50 metres in less than 60 seconds

• Swim 100 metres continuously on front and back in deep water

• Tread water for 30 seconds

• Surface dive to the floor of the pool

• Climb out of a pool unaided without using a ladder or steps (where the pool design permits).

To perform lifeguard duties, candidates must be physically fit, have good vision, good hearing and be mentally alert. All candidates must present suitable identification to the Trainer and Assessor. Lifeguarding doesn’t discriminate against age, religion, race, gender identity, socio economic status or sexual orientation. Lifeguards are representative of wider society and the lifeguard  workplace is welcoming and inclusive.

WHAT DOES THE NPLQ INVOLVE?

The NPLQ course requires a minimum of 36 hours training and 100% attendance. Courses usually run over consecutive days, midweek from 9:00 am until 5:30pm. Some venues may vary days and hold the end assessment on a weekend. The NPLQ covers all elements of Pool Rescue Techniques, Lifeguarding Theory, First Aid and CPR. The course includes swimming to set times, lifting casualties and diving to the deepest part of the swimming pool. Upon completion of training, the NPLQ is assessed by an independent assessor. The assessment will include multiple choice question papers, practical demonstrations of water rescue skills, CPR and First Aid. Upon qualifying, the NPLQ certificate is valid for two years from the date of successful completion.

HOW MUCH DOES AN NPLQ COURSE COST?

The NPLQ course costs £200 including assessment fees.

UPCOMING NPLQ COURSE DATES

7th July 8:30am till 6pm
